A video by Shea Caplice produced with Jane MacGregor
Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick. Sydney.
Childhood sexual abuse has received unprecedented attention and recognition in recent years. The prevalence of this childhood trauma and the extent that it affects the lives of the survivors are only now being gradually understood. In producing this video we wanted to explore the parallels between women’s sexual abuse and childbirth. Both these events are major experiences for some women and both involve the invasion of their personal and body boundaries. Subsequently these major life experiences are inextricably linked.
The video includes interviews with four women, all survivors of sexual abuse. The viewer is given an insight into the experience of childhood sexual abuse as these women tell their stories. The women draw attention to important issues for health care providers by highlighting the relationships between the experiences of sexual abuse, and sexuality, pregnancy and birthing. Furthermore in reflecting on their experiences the women go on to suggest ways of addressing these issues more sensitively. The honesty and courage of the women is inspiring and intensely moving. Their stories are witness to their strength and tenacity. One woman comments in the video “I could not find a voice” and thus the video becomes a small but integral vehicle of “voice” for all women. |
