 achievements

Achievements of the ACM NSW

The ACM NSW was directly involved in amendments to the NSW Nurses Act 1991 resulting in the name change to the Nurses and Midwives Act and midwives being recognised as professionals in our own right.

With the ACM NSW's committment to midwifery-led care we were instrumental in the introduction of midwifery models of care into the public health system in NSW. This has resulted in team midwifery becoming an increasing method of choice for women in the public health system.

We are continuing to lobby NSW Health to introduce independent midwives into the Public Hospital system and to utilize them as a valuable resource to women and the health care system.

The ACM NSW Branch pushed for the introduction of a direct entry Bachelor of Midwifery program to NSW.  Addressing NSW Health and the State political obstacles. The first intake of students commenced in 2005 at the University of Technology, Sydney.

We regularly meet on advisory boards for state government health initiatives, such as ’Families First’ and we are the first advisors in midwifery education and midwifery registration requirements for NSW.

 about us

 About us

The ACM NSW is a non-government, not for profit, volunteer-based organisation that provides services to midwives and women and birthing families, as well as a professional organisation supporting midwives in their work. We are the NSW branch of our national body the Australian College of Midwives.

Midwives work in consultation with women and their families during pregnancy, birth and subsequent care for the woman and her baby. As a provider of primary health care, midwives offer services that are relevant, accessible, safe and affordable to the community needs. Midwives practice in a variety of health service delivery models in order to meet the needs of women and their families.

The professional support offered to midwives by the ACM NSW includes conferences and seminars throughout the year, self directed learning packages for midwives in the workplace, refresher packages for midwives re-entering the workforce, a state conference annually as well as links to midwifery associations nationally and internationally. All of these activities contribute to ongoing education ensuring up to date clinical practice by midwives. The ACM NSW also has representatives on a variety of committees within the health system, the education sector and consumer groups.
