Refreshing Midwives Education Package
The ACM NSW Branch has recently revised the Refreshing Midwives education package. We are in negotiations with NSW Health as to the publishing of this document.
BACKGROUND
In 2004, the NSW Midwives Association (NSWMA) published Refreshing Midwives: Education for Practice. The content was a revised version of an earlier publication produced by the University Department of Rural Health, Faculty of Health Science, University of Tasmania. NSWMA received permission to undertake this revision. The Nursing and Midwifery Office (NaMO) at NSW Health provided funding support to revise the edition published in 2004. The bulk of the development and significant revision was undertaken by a team of volunteers and was led through the Professional Development Committee of NSWMA.
Recently, there has been interest from NaMO in the NSWMA undertaking a further revision of Refreshing Midwives. The revision will ensure the package is in line with current evidence and the redesign will focus on self directed learning and self assessment.
AIM
To revise Refreshing Midwives in line with recent evidence
Provide the package to NSW Health for use in NSW public health facilities in an electronic format that could, in time, be produced as an interactive CD
PROJECT PLAN
The project will be undertaken over a 3-month period.
1. Revise Refreshing Midwives in line with recent evidence
The content of the current package will be reviewed and updated in line with current evidence. In particular, the systematic reviews in The Cochrane Library will be examined for updates that should be included. State and National policy and international guidelines will also be examined for relevance and inclusion.
2. Redesign and produce the package
This part of the project involves redesigning the package into a format that will suit both hard copy production, electronic copy production and have the ability to be transferred into an interactive CD package in time. The redesign of the package will allow midwives to utilise the package for both ongoing professional development and with midwives returning to practice. The package will include self assessment activities. The refreshing midwives package will be linked to the Australian College of Midwives ongoing professional development program (MidPLUS). Midwives who complete the assessment component of the package would be eligible for continuing professional development points.
The package is more succinct than the previous package and will involve more interaction with the student. It is estimated that the package will be available late in 2009 more than likely through NSW Health.
